Farhan Rana named Associate Director for Cornell ECE

Cornell ECE is pleased to announce the appointment of Associate Professor Farhan Rana as associate director.

Cornell University's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is pleased to announce the appointment of Associate Professor Farhan Rana as associate director.

“Farhan is one of the most organized and effective instructors in ECE, his lectures are legendary for their rigor and insight,” said Clif Pollock, ECE Director and Ilda and Charles Lee Professor of Engineering. “He brings a broad spectrum of knowledge about the entire field of ECE to this position, as he has taught many of our core courses, created many well-received graduate courses, and has been an active member of the Curriculum and Standards Committee for the last three years.”

Rana will oversee all educational programs in ECE, emphasizing curriculum content. As Associate Director he also assigns and evaluates TAs, initiates peer teaching reviews, and serves as the representative of ECE at college-level curriculum issues.

“I am looking forward to Farhan’s review of our current courses, and adjustment of some offerings that will proactively keep our curriculum relevant to our dynamic field,” continued Pollock. “Farhan also runs a very active and leading research program in terahertz and materials, and we appreciate the commitment of time and energy Farhan is making to the school and to our students.”

While the associate director is involved mainly with the undergraduate curriculum, Rana will also closely interact with the School’s director, Clif Pollock and the director of graduate studies, Associate Professor Kevin Tang.

Rana takes on the responsibility of associate director from Professor David Albonesi, who will ascend back to being an active member of the Computer Systems Lab, but will also see through the upcoming ABET certification review in Fall 2016.

“I really appreciate all the work Dave has done to get us ready for the ABET review, and especially for his very effective leadership in revamping our ECE 3400 Design course.” said Pollock.

Rana is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and joined the faculty at Cornell University in 2003. He has won numerous research and teaching awards. He established and leads the semiconductor optoelectronics research group at Cornell ECE.
