Firehiwot Gurara, a junior at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University has recently received an IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Scholarship Plus John W. Estey Outstanding Scholar Award for 2017. The award is distributed annually to the top PES Scholar in each of the six IEEE U.S. regions and Canada and is given to students who have interest in pursuing careers related to power and energy engineering. In addition to the scholarship, the program offers mentorship and opportunities to gain experience in power and energy engineering careers through co-ops or internships.
Gurara’s interest in power and energy topics arises from the electric power problems she observed while growing up in Ethiopia. She intends to go to graduate school to study power electronics and integration of renewable energy sources with the power grid. She attended Montgomery College, a community college in Maryland before Cornell University.
Awardees are selected by industry and academic representatives based on academic preparation, extra-curricular activities and leadership, interest in engineering in general, and power and energy engineering in particular, the technical quality of their application and an overall assessment of student's potential for a successful power and energy engineering career.
Made possible by the support of the S&C Foundation, the award is named after John W. Estey, one of only three Chief Executive Officers in S&C Electric Company's 100-year history. He is an IEEE Fellow, a past Director of IEEE and past IEEE Power & Energy Society President. S&C Electric Company is a global provider of equipment and services for electric power systems. Founded in 1911, the Chicago-based company designs and manufactures switching and protection products for electric power transmission and distribution.
The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) provides the world's largest forum for sharing the latest in technological developments in the electric power industry, for developing standards that guide the development and construction of equipment and systems and for educating members of the industry and the general public. Members of the Power & Energy Society are leaders in this field, and they and their employers derive substantial benefits from involvement with this unique and outstanding association.

Rick Johnson, an engineering professor on the Hill—and, at the risk of a mixed metaphor, something of a Renaissance man. At Cornell since 1981, Johnson has spent decades teaching and doing research in electrical engineering, particularly in the fields of control systems and signal processing. But over the past twelve years, his interests have entailed as much art as science. A pioneer in the field of computational art history, Johnson leverages both his engineering acumen and his abiding passion for art to study the physical materials with which works are made.
