Tong Group wins Best Conference Paper at IEEE Power Energy Society General Meeting

A paper by Kursat Rasim Mestav (Ph.D. candidate), Jaime Luengo-Rozas (M.Eng. '18), and ECE’s Lang Tong was selected as one of the Best Conference Papers at the 2018 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM).

A paper by Kursat Rasim Mestav (Ph.D. candidate), Jaime Luengo-Rozas (M.Eng. '18), and ECE’s Lang Tong, the Irwin and Joan Jacobs Professor of Engineering was selected as one of the Best Conference Papers at the 2018 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM) to be held in August in Portland, Oregon. IEEE PESGM is the flagship conference for the IEEE Power and Energy Society.

The paper titled “State Estimation for Unobservable Distribution Systems via Deep Neural Networks” solves a fundamental problem in monitoring and control for distribution power systems when very few sensor measurements are available. Combining deep learning, Bayesian inference, and Monte Carlo computation, the paper proposes a new approach that overcomes a major challenge of network unobservability and outperforms the state-of-the-art benchmarks.

Lang Tong joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University in 1998 where he is now the Irwin and Joan Jacobs Professor in Engineering.  A Fellow of IEEE, he is the site director of the Power System Engineering Research Center (PSERC).  He is also the 2018 Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Alternative Energy.  His group currently focuses on optimization, machine learning, and market operations in smart grid and energy systems.

The mission of IEEE Power & Energy Society is to be the leading provider of scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy for the betterment of society, and preferred professional development source of its members. Find out more at https://www.ieee-pes.org
