Biography:

Zygmunt J. Haas received his B.Sc. in ECE in 1979 and M.Sc. in EE in 1985. After earning his his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1988, Dr. Haas joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in the Network Research Department. There he pursued research on wireless communications, mobility management, fast protocols, optical networks, and optical switching. From September 1994 till July 1995, Dr. Haas worked for the AT&T Wireless Center of Excellence, where he investigated various aspects of wireless and mobile networking, especially TCP/IP networks. As of August 1995, he joined the faculty of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineeringat Cornell University, where he is now a Full Professor. Prof. Haas served in the past as an Associate Director for Academic Affairs of the Cornell's School of ECE.

Dr. Haas is an author of numerous technical papers and holds fifteen patents in the fields of high-speed networking, wireless networks, and optical switching. He has organized several workshops, delivered numerous tutorials at major IEEE and ACM conferences, and has served as editor of various journals and magazines, including the IEEE Transactions on Networking, the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, the IEEE Communications Magazine, and the Springer Wireless Networks journal. He has been a guest editor of IEEE JSAC issues on "GigabitNetworks," "Mobile Computing Networks," and "Ad-Hoc Networks". Dr. Haas is a Fellow of IEEE, has been the Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Personal Communications, the Chair of the Steering Committee of the IEEE "Pervasive Computing" magazine, and a Chair of Ithaca IEEE Chapter.

Research interests:

Prof. Haas heads the Wireless Netwroks Laboratory (WNL) at Cornell - an internationally recognized research group working in the area of wireless and mobile systems.

In general, the research goals of the WNL are the proliferation of wireless and mobile communication, so as to allow ubiquitous, multi-media access to information and services by mobile and stationary users.

In particular, the crrent research interests of WNL concentrate on three areas:

  • Wireless and Mobile Ad Hoc Networks and Wireless Sensor Networks
  • Complex Networks and Systems
  • Biologically-Inspired Networks and Systems

Some of the past and present projects include: Delay Tolerant Networks, Cooperative Networks, Opportunistic Routing, Stochastic Routing, Scalable Routing, Scalability of Wireless Networks, and 3D Networks.
