The Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index (FSP Index) is a method for evaluating doctoral programs at Research Universities (both Carnegie Research Extensive and Research Intensive), based on a set of statistical algorithms developed by Lawrence Martin, PhD. The FSP Index measures the annual productivity of faculty on several factors including:

• Publications (books and journal articles)


• Citations of journal publications


• Federal Research Funding


• Awards and Honors

The FSP analysis creates, at the discipline level, a scale based on the cumulative scoring of a program's faculty using these measures compared against national standards. Each program can then be compared to the national mean z-score.

Individual program scores can then be combined to demonstrate the quality of the scholarly work within broad fields as well as the entire university. When analyzed over time, a full picture of the direction of the program or university research can be realized.

By compiling the individual faculty activity into departmental indexes, one can truly assess the research strength of a university.

The FSP Index is unique in its focus on concrete data relating to faculty scholarly productivity. The FSP Index contains no reputational assessments, and is unrivaled in the depth and detail of its content - even compiling data in areas where other assessments have found difficulty (e.g. book publications).
