M.Eng.Projects: Cornell 100+ MPG Team
The Cornell 100+ MPG Team is an engineering project group whose goal is to compete in and win the Progressive Insurance Automotive X-Prize Competition. We are also striving to help develop a new form of automobile that will reduce global non-renewable power consumption and harmful emissions. [return to projects page]
Cornell 100 M.P.G. Team's Approach
The team makes use of a 'parallel' design strategy where electrical, mechanical, and structural components are built and tested in a prototype car while the final vehicle is designed simultaneously – culminating in the transfer of the technology to the final vehicle. State of the art simulation technology has allowed the team to compare a large number of electric motors, ultra-efficient internal combustion engines, and variations of hybrid drive train layouts to ultimately produce a comprehensive vehicle design.
The Journey and Goals
With an enthusiastic and talented student body, the Cornell 100 M.P.G. Team strives to learn and apply knowledge about automobile design while recognizing and addressing the efficiency and lack of environmental incentives that afflict today's consumer market. Our goals are to:
- Win the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE Competition
- Increase the public's awareness of ultra-efficient automotive technology
- To educate students, the next generation of automotive engineers, to be energy conscience in their personal and work lives
More Information
“I have been impressed with the depth of knowledge and physics background of coworkers who are ECE Cornell graduates and wanted to achieve the same on my return to school. I also found professors here I wanted to collaborate with who are conducting exciting research in the field of optics.”
- Tiffanie D’Alberto, ECE MS/PhD Student
