Energy and Power Systems

The energy and power systems group at Cornell conducts research addressing fundamental engineering and economic challenges facing our rapidly evolving electricity grid. Current research efforts center on innovation in improving grid operational efficiency, security, and reliability; real-time power system assessment, control, and optimization,  power system harmonics analysis and control,  large-scale integration of variable renewable energy resources; energy economics and market design; power system stability and contingency analysis; cyber-security and privacy; demand response and energy management; centralized and decentralized energy management.  Cornell has an established international reputation in power systems research.  We are founding member of the Power System Engineering Research Center (PSERC) which is a government, industry, and university supported consortium involving 13 major universities. Our research is highly multidisciplinary with strong collaborations across multiple departments including Applied Economics, Computer Science, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Biological and Environmental Engineering.
