Two Cornell ECE teams reach finals in 2014 Qualcomm Innovation Competition

Two teams from Cornell School of Electrical and Computer Engineering were selected as finalists in the 2014 Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QInF) 2014.

The Cornell ECE team of Enkhbayasgalan Gantsog and Ivan Bukreyev will present their proposal, Distributed Synchronization for Peer-to-Peer Networks in New Jersey on March 24, 2014. Their faculty advisor is Alyssa Apsel.

The Cornell ECE team of Amandianeze Nwana and Sinem Unal will present their proposal, Advanced Transmission and Prediction Techniques for High-Density Homogeneous Networks in San Diego on March 27, 2014. Their faculty advisors are Aaron Wagner and Tsuhan Chen.

According to the announcement of the finalists, QInF received 137 eligible applications this year from the 18 participating U.S. schools and the judges were delighted by the diversity, quality, and innovation in the proposals. Qualcomm stated that the competition was very competitive and it was a real challenge for the reviewers to select the 34 finalist teams. “We sincerely wish to congratulate all the applicants for their hard work and innovation,” affirmed the announcement from Qualcomm. “We hope that each one of the 137 teams will succeed in bringing their research goals to reality.”

The contest now moves on to the three QInF 2014 Finals. The Finals will be held at three of Qualcomm's R&D Centers in New Jersey, San Diego, and Santa Clara. The winning teams will be selected after the Finals, and will receive a $100,000 Fellowship per team. Teams are required to prepare a 15-minute proposal presentation, which will be part of the winner selection process.

QInF is focused on recognizing, rewarding, and mentoring innovative Ph.D. students across a broad range of technical research areas, based on Qualcomm core values of innovation, execution, and teamwork. Qualcomm’s Corporate Research & Development (CRD) engineers participate in carefully reviewing all submitted proposals and selecting the QInF Finalists, who are then invited to present their proposals to a panel of executive judges. Qualcomm researchers mentor winning students, facilitating close collaboration and interaction with Qualcomm engineers.

The Innovation Fellowship is open to students from a variety of top U.S.-based and (since 2012) international schools. In 2013, QInF expanded to include Cornell University in its competition and in 2014 will award Fellowships across eight winning U.S.-based teams.
