Advisor Special Committee
All ECE Ph.D. students are required to select an Advisor / Committee Chair prior to the completion of the first year in their graduate program. The Advisor / Committee Chair must be an ECE Graduate Field Faculty Member. Failure to successfully select an Advisor / Committee Chair before the end of your first year will be considered a failure to make satisfactory academic progress, and may have an impact on the decision of the ECE Department to provide you with additional funding for your continued graduate program.
You will be required to officially nominate your Advisor / Committee Chair, by making the Graduate School aware of your choice. You can do this electronically via the Student Center. Select your Advisor / Committee Chair from the list provided for you and indicate your choice. An automated email will then be sent notifying the ECE Manager of Student Services, your Advisor and the ECE Director of Graduate Studies, prompting them for their approval. Once all three have electronically indicated their approval online, the process will be considered completed. No hard copy forms are required to be submitted.
You will be required to complete the same process listed above each time you make **ANY*** changes to the membership of your Special Committee. Every single time you make any changes to the membership of your Committee, you will need to initiate this same process via the Student Center. The ECE Manager of Student Services, your Advisor, your Committee Members and the ECE Director of Graduate Studies will all be notified. Once all of them have indicated their electronic approval online, the process will be considered completed. No hard copy forms are required to be submitted.
You should have the membership of their Special Committee completed prior to the end of your third semester in your graduate program.
All ECE Ph.D. students are required to have a total of three (3) faculty members on their Special Committee in order for it to be considered complete. The first member will be your Advisor, and the other two members are considered Minor Committee members. Most ECE students have one minor advisor from the ECE graduate field, and one minor advisor from a field outside of ECE.
