ECE Master of Engineering Program

ECE Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) Program at Cornell University

Program Overview

Please note: The Guide for Prospective MEng Students is in revision and will be available later this summer (2008).

Cornell Engineering's one-year professional Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree program offers thorough coverage of the topics important to the field of electrical engineering. The program is intended for students seeking advanced training in current technology and engineering design.  The degree is especially recommended for students planning a career in engineering development, design, or manufacturing. The program is course intensive and requires a design project with a written report rather than a formal research thesis. M. Eng. students take regular graduate-level courses open to all qualified graduate students. Through careful and individualized curriculum planning, the program accommodates students from a wide variety of backgrounds who seek advanced training in a multiplicity of different subjects.

The time and effort devoted to improving technical knowledge and skills is an important investment that continues to be highly valued by industry.

Corporate recruiters seek M. Eng. graduates for prime employment positions in engineering design with starting salaries $8,000-$10,000 higher than that of those holding only a bachelor's degree. Over the professional lifetime as an engineer, the anticipated financial benefit due to higher starting salary alone is over $250,000. Moreover, M. Eng. graduates often begin their careers with more exciting job assignments and tend to receive management positions or supervisory responsibility sooner than do those with an undergraduate degree alone.

“I was hesitant to attend Cornell because it is my undergraduate alma mater, afraid that doing so would limit my experience, but after visiting several other schools I was most impressed with the energetic people and creative research going on in ECE at Cornell. The department strives to provide a positive environment for fledgling researchers to grow into skilled ones.”
